Part 2 case study of our Hugh Myddelton Primary School project begins with our work in the KS2 play area, which was completely transformed.
Key Stage 2 (KS2) Play Area
The brief here was to pack in as many new outdoor play provisions as possible, whilst still leaving ample room for simply running around. The Challenger Climber (presented in detail here: Challenger Climber case study) was complemented by a huge Pyramid Net and an Adventure Trail, providing a varied challenge with something for everybody to enjoy.

A Forest Shelter provides an inviting space to take lessons and breaktimes outdoors all year round.
A Pyramid Net complements the main climber.
Key Stage 1 (KS1) Play Area
The Key Stage 1 play area required a refresh of the play equipment on the bank near the MUGA, as well as lots of freestanding equipment, to continue the flexible ethos of the EYFS curriculum as pupils transition to KS1.
During the course of the works it was found that the existing retaining wall was inadequate, so we installed a new one to replace it and reinforce the bank.
Music panels provide a fun space for self expression.
Our Skylark climber was personalised to the school’s colours, and refreshed the embankment play area, with vibrant artificial grass underfoot.
Nurture Garden
The Nurture Garden was a late addition to the schedule of works. This space was designed for SEN pupils to have their own space to play and learn outdoors, with soft artificial grass underfoot, and our tactile panels encouraging exploration of the senses.
Reading Corner
The school grounds transformation concluded with a lovely new reading corner, in a previously under utilised corner of the school’s grounds.
The main feature here was a huge amphitheatre which provides a great focal point for outdoor lessons, or for children to create their own stories and boost their confidence and communication skills.
Two gorgeous reading huts create an enclosed space for quiet group work, or for role play.
Look at that joinery!
This may well be one of the proudest moments in my career, and the school are over the moon. They have already started reporting back about improvements in their pupils’ behaviour, physical development, and confidence, and they have told us they will keep us updated over the school year, which we are very excited about.
